‘Pertaining to Origins’ is an ongoing series of research collaborations that explore the visualization of information relating to aspects of the Nucleus. It is an associated aspect of the conference series titled ‘Dynamic Organization of Nuclear Function’ which is held bi-annually at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York. This conference is a forum for research into identifying the form and function of the elements within the cell nucleus. ‘Pertaining to Origins’, endeavours to creatively visualize these elements and their relationships, outwith the scientific process/protocols – exploring the questions: What do these elements look like? and how do they interact?

The project began with an invitation in 2002 to develop new images for that years conference with co-organiser Dr Wendy Bickmore. The work produced subsequently developed into an ongoing series of collaborations including:

  • Dr. Wendy Bickmore, Human Genetics Unit,
    MRC Edinburgh -2002
  • Dr. David Spector (Spector Lab)
    Director of Research (CSHL) -2004
  • Dr. Jason Swedlow, School of Life Sciences,
    University of Dundee - 2006
  • Dr. Genvieve Almounez, Institut Curie,
    Paris – 2008

All artworks are developed collaboratively through the processes of microscopy and screenprinting. More recently however, we have developed a proposal for developing a multi media interactive model of the Nucleus that will function both as a public exhibition/installation and as an educational/research tool.
