Publishing Facility

Visual Research Centre

Paul is currently appointed as research assistant and Researcher at the University of Dundee, Visual Research Centre (VRC) where he co-ordinates and facilitates activity in the print publishing facility. This activity is centred around the realisation of print production projects in support of staff research. Such projects have included the 'Leabhar Mor/Great Book of Gaelic', commissioned by the Gaelic Arts Agency (Cannongate and published in full by Cannongate (2002). Also the 'Higher Still (prints for schools)' project, the 'Voices of Scotland' project for the new Scottish Parliament building and book and folio projects with artists such as Richard Long and Fiona Banner.

The publishing area of VRC houses state of the art facilities

for the production and editioning of artists’ books and prints. These facilities include a purpose built pre-press room with drawing area, darkroom and mac stations complete with the essential desktop software for all print publishing requirements. Large format digital and wet film outputs are available as are a variety of bookbinding and finishing solutions. The production centrepiece is the purpose built press room which houses a semi automatic screen printing system which enables the achievement of fine quality print with the potential for high quantity production.

The facility centres around the integration of traditional print knowledge with new and developing technologies. Essentially a project facility built on skills and experience with a remit to support the visual research culture of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.

The unique nature of the facility supports a developmental approach to project production, enabling practitioners engaged in visual research the opportunity to work directly and collaboratively with the appropriate specialists. It offers the opportunity to experiment within process in order to achieve the appropriate design realisation or alternatively a completely unprescribed outcome.
